Adult Eye Exam
BEFORE COMING TO THE EYE CLINIC
What to take along:
- Prescription of current and old glasses
- Medical reports
- All spectacles
- List of medicines
- Stop wearing any contact lens for 24 hours before the appointment please.
INITIAL ASSESSMENT
Collaborators will perform an initial assessment by measuring your vision and taking down a preliminary history. Should you need diagnostic exams the will be done and dilating drops are usually instilled to dilate the pupils. There is a variable wait from 10 to 30 minutes and sometimes drops need to be instilled a second time.
EXAMINATION WITH DR SCISCIO
You will discuss your case with Dr Sciscio after a thorough evaluation of the diagnostic tests just done and a full eye examination, this includes measuring the eye pressure and fundus (retina and optic nerve) check with photographic documentation. Dr Sciscio will explain in detail the results and the motivations with risks and benefits of medical or surgical treatment.
You will be given a full medical report with treatment details.
It is not advisable to drive for 2-3 hours if you have had dilating drops.

WHEN TO HAVE YOUR CHILD EXAMINED?
The international standards advice to have an initial exam at the age of 3 years, unless problems are noted before. In children there are special ways to test the vision despite them not able to read letters.

INITIAL ASSESSMENT
Initially the collaborators will take down a history and perform some initial tests.
ORTHOPTIC ASSESSMENT
Conducted by Dr Sciscio consists in the evaluation of ocular motility, detection of binocular vision and cover test to determine the presence of a squint.
PUPIL DILATION
Drops will be used specifically for children, these might sting a little but young patients usually quickly forget about it. Sometimes the drops need to be instilled more than once, in particular in dark eyes. It might take from 15 minutes to one hour to achieve good dilation.
FULL EYE EXAM
Next step is the evaluation of the amount of degrees of hyperopia, astigmatism or myopia if any.
Rarely pupils do not dilate in the clinic and children are send home on drops and seen after 3 days of drops.
At the end of the consultation a medical report is issued together with indications for possible glasses.
